What are your skincare hacks for the road? As an advocate for natural homemade skincare, I was seriously terrified at the thought of travelling the world without my own handmade beauty products. By becoming location independent, I was drastically changing not only my lifestyle, but also my entire beauty routine.
As I’ve learnt during my travels, there is always a way to use natural ingredients wherever you are to look after your skin. It’s even easier if you are travelling in the tropics as you will most likely get fruit for breakfast. Just wrap a couple of pieces of banana, watermelon and mango into a napkin and you’ve already got ingredients for the most amazing face mask.
So to give you an idea of the treats you can create during your travels, I’d like to share some of my favourite recipes.
Skincare Hack 1: Luxurious Coconut Milk & Mango Hair Mask
Our hair gets damaged pretty badly in the hot sun so it’s essential to treat it to a natural mask at least once every a week or two.
If you are travelling in a country where you can buy fresh coconut milk and ripe mangoes, use them to revitalise your locks.
Due to the naturally occurring proteins in coconut milk combined with the plentiful vitamin A and natural fatty acids in mangoes, the combination will act as a luxurious conditioner for your hair.
How to make the Luxurious Coconut Milk & Mango Hair Mask:
1 ripe mango
1 cup of coconut milk
1 egg yolk (optional)
In a bowl, mash half of a ripe, peeled mango. Add the coconut milk and mix until a smooth paste. If you have it handy, add the egg yolk for extra benefits.
Apply the mask to your hair for 20-30 minutes and shampoo it out. If you have a fridge handy, you can keep the mask fresh for a day or two.
Skincare Hack 2: Rejuvenating Dragon Fruit Face Scrub
Not only does Dragon Fruit taste amazing, it’s also rich in active antioxidants, essential to keep our skin healthy and youthful. So next time, when you are wandering around the local market, look out for this beautiful hot pink fruit.
How to make the Rejuvenating Dragon Fruit Face Scrub:
1 tsp of fresh Dragon Fruit flesh
2 tsp sugar/salt/coffee grounds
In a bowl mush a teaspoon of fresh Dragon Fruit flesh with a fork. Add the sugar/salt or coffee grounds, if available. Gently scrub your face with the mixture for 3-5 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water, moisturise.
Always remember to keep your face out of direct sunlight after a scrub or even better, scrub away in the evening and let your skin regenerate overnight.
Skincare Hack 3: Handmade Coconut & Papaya Lotion for Sunburned Skin
Papayas are not only healthy treats which help you glow from the inside. The natural oils and vitamin C in this fruit help regenerate skin cells, pamper, rejuvenate and nourish wind-beaten and especially sunburned skin.
Coconut milk is equally calming for your skin, especially after a day on the beach. It’s naturally soothing, restores moisture and acts well as a sunburn treatment.
For the ultimate effect, combine the two ingredients together to make a soothing lotion.
How to make the Coconut & Papaya Lotion:
1 ripe papaya
1 cup of coconut milk
Scoop the papaya flesh out with a spoon and discard the seeds. In a bowl, mush the fruit, add the coconut milk and mix well. Apply the lotion onto your sunburned skin, let it soak in then wash the treatment off with lukewarm water.
