Stone skimming in Danang? Why not, shall we go check it out? We debated this over a glass of cold beer with Vicki and James from The Independent Nomads. It’s the 17th International John Lidbetter Competition after all, we better put in an appearance!
This was a big day out for us, Map Trotters. Since arriving to the beautiful town of Hội An on the coast of Vietnam, we’ve done nothing but work hard all month on our website in our rented apartment. Going to the big city was a great distraction as we both desperately needed a digital detox and some physical activity.
2016 International Stone Skimming Competition in Danang
We first found out about the International Stone Skimming Competition while lunching at the local Aussie restaurant Dingo Deli. The competition, organised by the ex-pat community in Danang is a great way to bring everyone together, skim some stones, get a little tipsy, socialise and enjoy live music.
Flying Stones, Rolling Stones and Stone Roses
On our arrival to the Dawn Beach Bar, the place was buzzing already. Shortly after a couple of refreshments, 3 new contestants were added to the list: Flying Stones, Rolling Stones and Stone Roses. What a team! I stayed behind to take some shots of the event and make sure the stone trio gets documented appropriately.

Despite the burning sun, the beach quickly filled with spectators as well as the contenders, over 50 of them, nice! Everyone was super supportive and happily clapping away for the stone skimming in Danang.
Once all the stones had been skimmed, the guests retreated back to the bar for more cocktails and beer. Filled with live music, the atmosphere was great. Did I mention there was free food too? It was delicious, well prepared and it just kept on coming, thanks guys!
There were prizes for the 3 highest ranking skimmers like bottles of champagne and something we would have loved to win – vouchers for Fish & Chips at the East Side Fish & Chips! Although we didn’t win anything (sob), it was a great day out on a beautiful blond beach.
This is what travelling is all about, meeting lovely people, skimming stones, getting involved and having a great time anywhere in the world. We had a blast.
