Paia to me, is the coolest town in Maui and it has it all. We really enjoyed visiting this bohemian place. If you are after surfing equipment or a quality tattoo, Paia is the place to visit in Maui.
Paia town in Maui
The town is so vibrant. It’s full of restaurants, cafés, yoga studios, galleries, shops, you name it. Not to mention the beach, eternal sunshine and warm evenings with a balmy ocean breeze…
The girls and guys here are so cool, they drive massive pick-up trucks or simply carry their surfing boards to the beach. You will spot a surfing board in nearly every car boot. To me, that’s a true Hawaiian town with lots and lots of Aloha.
Ho’okipa Beach Park – windsurfing capital of the world
Ho’okipa Beach Park – the windsurfing capital of the world is just minutes away. It’s a great Maui beach to watch surfers and windsurfers. We didn’t get to see (sob!) but you might be lucky to spot some giant turtles sunning on the beach, keep your eyes peeled!
At first sight, the beach looks a little bit rocky, but further along the coast (to the right when facing the ocean) there is a beautiful beach fit for snorkelling, swimming or lovely picnics. We enjoyed our walk through the rocky bits of the beach park. As it was February the water was very rough and the waves were gigantic.
As we walked along the rocks, we saw quite a few crosses in memory of surfers that have perished in the near by ocean. But the locals still brave the waves.
The Ho’okipa Beach is loved by the locals and many of them come here to catch a soulful sunset or even have a glimpse of the beautiful humpback whales. In summer time the beach is great for the surfing beginners as the turquoise ocean is a little calmer.
In winter, when the days are windier and the ocean gets rougher, the beach becomes a world class windsurf and kite surfing destination. Quite a few competitions are held here which attract competitors from all over the world. It’s a truly incredible place to visit and we really recommend stopping here at least for a day.
