Hapuna Beach is perfect for a lazy day with a book or a fun day boogie boarding. We had a truly incredible time exploring The Big Island, but there’s only so much you can do without rest. It was time to have some down time. Charlie looked up the beach on Google Maps and soon we were speeding towards the gorgeous white sand beach.
The white sand Hapuna Beach
The white sand Hapuna beach is absolutely gorgeous. Stretching for 2 miles it’s great for swimming, boogie boarding, paddle boarding, bodysurfing and also provides a very safe practice ground for surfing newbies. It’s great for picnicking too so don’t forget to pack a few goodies.
Back in 1993, Hapuna beach was named the Best Beach in America by Florida International University professor Stephen Leatherman. So pack your sun glasses, sunscreen and a hat, it’s time to hit the beach!
We spent all day at the beach and had lots of fun boogie boarding in the turquoise, crystal clear water. It was a perfect day.
Staying Safe on the Hapuna Beach
During our visit in February 2014, the beach was a dream. Calm, shallow, crystal clear and safe. However, the beach is not protected from the Ocean so can get rough at times, just like the notorious Big Beach.
There are lifeguards present on the beach, but you should always use your own common sense and be cautious when swimming.
Like most places in Hawaii, Hapuna beach is hassle free. There is a large car park right near the beach, complete with some food vans as well as a WC .
Sadly it was our last day on the incredible Big Island and after a fun day on the beach, we said our goodbyes and hopped to Maui.
