Surrounded by a wonderful Pacific setting Hanalei is one of those charming places that will steals your heart and never give it back. We loved it so much and it literally was our everyday destination while staying on the North Shore of Kaua’i. If you are planning a trip Kaua’i, we recommending stopping at this beautiful town meaning “lei making” in Hawaiian.
Charming Hanalei Town
Not only is this town pretty, but also famous. It was used a backdrop in several film productions such as ‘South Pacific’, ‘The Descendants’ starring George Clooney and was also mentioned in ‘Twin Peaks’. The setting of the is truly magical, especially when the mist covers the ridged mountains.
The town might seem small, but it has everything you need and even more. Our honeymoon house in “heaven” was only 10 minute drive from the Hanalei so we popped here for all sorts of things. Food in the restaurants is really good and I loved nosing around in the little shops and cute galleries. We also treated ourselves to a SPA’s and some healthy nibbles from a health store on the corner.
Wai’oli Hui’ia Church
Every time we drove into the town, we past this beautiful Wai’oli Hui’ia Church – “i ka poli o Hanalei – in the heart of Hanalei”. We were blown away by the stunning setting.
One day, actually on our last day on the North Shore, we decided to have a look around. The chapel is beautiful, especially the colourful and abstract stained glass.
100% Kona House Brew
I did enjoyed a good double espresso shot on a couple of occasions in the Hanalei Coffee Roasters House but, unfortunately, the cafe has closed now. Their Facebook Page is still live though if you want to check what their are up to.
But there’s another great spot where you can get beautifully fresh 100% Kona house brew. Head to Na Pali Art Gallery & Coffee House, just a few minutes outside the town driving towards Na Pali Coast.
Gorgeous crescent – shaped Hanalei Bay
Just a stone’s throw away from the centre of the town we found the gorgeous crescent – shaped Hanalei Bay, the biggest bay in the North Shore Kauai.
